BEND, Ore. — Community members picked up paintbrushes Saturday to help bring a message of love to the side of a local church.

Boston-based artist Alex Cook, who has been creating “You Are Loved” murals since 2013, designed the latest piece as part of a nationwide project now spanning 15 states and more than 120 murals.

The new 25-foot mural is located at the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Bend, at 1013 NE 10th Street, just off Greenwood Avenue near Pilot Butte. The church sponsored the mural and welcomed volunteers from the community for the painting event.

Cook described the mural’s message as a source of comfort and connection.

“A simple message of love that is confident and just meets people in their daily lives can really serve as a healing tool,” he said.

The event was free and open to participants of all skill levels, with supplies provided. The mural is expected to be completed in the coming days and will serve as a lasting symbol of love and unity in Bend.
