Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks has shared an update on filming for Corriedale, the huge soap crossover episode coming early next year. ITV bosses recently announced plans for Corrie and Emmerdale to join forces for a special edition featuring a huge stunt.

Corriedale will see much-loved characters from both long-running shows interact together for the first time – and the dramatic sequence of events will have huge consequences for everyone involved.

Speaking to us at a Corrie press event this week, Brooks commented: “Filming on Corriedale is going brilliantly. We’ve got a brilliant director. The script’s brilliant. The actors are loving it, because it’s so different and unique from what they’ve ever done before.

“I’ve been on set a few times and the mood and the camaraderie is really infectious. People are loving working with people they have not worked with before.

“It’s exciting – I just can’t help but imagine what my mum’s going to be like watching this episode! She’ll be so beside herself, because as a soap fan, the idea of sitting down watching your two favourite shows with all your favourite characters interact in this massive, unmissable piece of telly, it’s just amazing.

“Even if I didn’t work in soap, I’d be so excited for this because it’s just a soap fan’s dream.”

She continued: “I think what we’ve done really well is make sure that the episode encapsulates what makes both shows unique, but also has that universal appeal that soap is brilliant telly and it’s soaptastic.

“I think that those combinations are going to be a real treat for fans.”

Brooks paid tribute to the unsung heroes behind the scenes who have helped to get such an ambitious project off the ground. Filming began at the end of September, but soap chiefs have managed to preserve secrecy around the stunt and the characters involved.

“Everyone’s worked so, so hard on this behind the scenes,” she said. “It’s been quite a feat logistically to get everything in the right place.

“It’s a testament to how hard-working and how passionate all the people are behind the scenes – from schedulers to crew and DOPs and directors and ADs. Everyone has put their heart and soul into it.”

Corriedale will serve as the big launch of ITV’s new “power hour” scheduling for the soaps next year, as Emmerdale and Corrie will both air five nights a week for 30 minutes at 8pm and 8.30pm respectively.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
