Former West Ham favourite, Julian Dicks has stepped down from his role as head coach of Heybridge Swifts.

Dicks, who returned to the Essex-based club for a third managerial stint in May 2024, announced his resignation shortly after the Swifts’ 1–1 draw with Mildenhall Town. The result left the team languishing in 16th place in the Isthmian League North Division after 11 games—a disappointing position for a side with promotion ambitions.

In a candid statement shared on social media, Dicks cited a reduction in the club’s already modest budget as the tipping point:

“I decided to leave Heybridge last night after I was told that the already lower budget was being cut again. This, amongst other issues, and certain people at the club, has led me to make this decision. I believe the players and the fans deserve more”

Dicks, known for his no-nonsense style both on and off the pitch, had previously guided Heybridge to the brink of promotion in 2019, only to be denied by restructuring rules. His return in 2024 was met with optimism, but persistent financial limitations and behind-the-scenes tensions appear to have eroded that promise.

What next for Julian Dicks-Hammers reunion perhaps?

The club acknowledged his departure with gratitude, stating:

“We’d like to thank Julian for his time, effort and commitment during his spell in charge and wish him all the best for the future”.

Assistant manager Adrian Whitbread, who similarly spent time at West Ham as a player has taken interim charge while the club explores its options for a permanent replacement.

As for Dicks, whose managerial experience includes stints with Wivenhoe Town, Grays Athletic, and West Ham United Ladies, not to mention coaching roles alongside Slaven Bilic at West Ham and West Brom his next move remains uncertain.

Maybe, a role with the Academy as a coach at West Ham beckons?
