Alex de Minaur was beaten by Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinal of the Shanghai Masters last week and now, he might be set for a spell on the sidelines.

De Minaur was looking to go one better than he did at the China Open when Jannik Sinner beat him in the semifinal, but came up against a resurgent Medvedev.

De Minaur released a statement yesterday about his participation at a UTS event in Hong Kong, and now it’s emerged exactly why he’s needed to pull out.

De Minaur received some good news last week regarding the ATP Finals, but now, his place might end up being up for grabs after the latest development.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a solid year on the tour, even if winning tournaments of note has seemingly escaped him once again.

De Minaur is going to sit out with a hip problem at the UTS event in Hong Kong this week and now it remains to be seen what the rest of the year looks like for the Australian.

De Minaur’s coach, Matt Reid, told The First Serve that his hip problem is linked to the one which saw him withdraw from Wimbledon at the quarterfinal stage in 2024.

He’s claimed that more will be announced in the next few days and it’s not clear whether De Minaur will play in Vienna or Paris before the ATP Finals.

🚨 EXCLUSIVE: 🇦🇺 Alex #deMinaur’s coach, Matt Reid, has told The First Serve that Alex’s hip injury is linked to the same problem as last year, but insists the decision to sit out of the #UTS Tour event is just for “injury prevention”.

What Alex de Minaur thinks about his year so far

It has to be seen as a positive that De Minaur has remained a top 10 player this year and will once again take his place at the ATP Finals should he be fit enough.

Last year, the finals saw him lose all three matches, which he played in the group stages, and he will be hoping to give a better account of himself if he plays the event this year.

De Minaur has been asked by Tennis Majors, on the back of his injury update, how he would view his year if his hip problem curtailed it prematurely.

He said: Yeah, I think it would have been a good season. Of course, I broke some of my own records. I managed to get 50 wins in a year, which is a great achievement. I’ve put myself in good positions again to compete for the end of the bigger tournaments.

“I’m currently in the top 10, so it would have been a lot of good results in this season, of course.

“I would hope that it doesn’t end right here, right now, and I can still kind of continue and push for a little bit longer, but I think I’m definitely improving, developing, and every year seems to be getting better and better, which is a good thing.”

Now, for De Minaur and his fans, an anxious wait looks to be in store ahead of future tournaments this year.
