When you’re on the edge of the AVCA top 25 poll voting as Marquette was last week with just 15 points, it’s probably in your best interest to not give the voters that do like you an excuse to not vote for you. You can argue that’s what happened over the weekend as Marquette needed four sets to beat Seton Hall and St. John’s, both of whom are sub-200 in the RPI as of Monday morning.
You can definitely argue it, as even though Marquette’s RPI didn’t move, the point total in the AVCA poll for the Golden Eagles did move. It fell five points down to 10 in Monday’s brand new top 25 rankings. That lands MU in between Iowa State with 18 points and our old friends Western Kentucky with nine points. It’s good enough for the unofficial #30 team in the country ranking this week.
Wisconsin is still the top ranked team on Marquette’s schedule this season, but the Badgers did dip from #7 to #9 this week. Creighton held steady at #13, while Minnesota fell four spots down to #18 right now. That’s it for ranked teams on the schedule this week, but there is one more notable name in the Recieving Votes area. Florida picked up 70 points to be the unofficial #26 team in the country, but they’re still pretty far away from #25 USC with 155 points.
Marquette returns to action this coming Friday when they face Xavier at the McGuire Center in the front end of a pair of weekend matches at home. The Xavier match is notable, as MU is currently tied with the Musketeers for second place in the league. First serve is scheduled for 7pm Central, and ESPN+ will have the broadcast. After that, Marquette will host Butler on Saturday at 6pm Central time, again on ESPN+.
