The team is partnering with nonprofit MindsEye to offer free live audio description services at 20 home games.

INDIANAPOLIS — There’s a new experience inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse for Pacers fans with visual disabilities.

The team debuted the technology during Monday evening’s preseason matchup with the Spurs.

There’s nothing like sitting at Gainbridge and watching the Pacers on the court. Marc Morris knows all about it. His love for the team runs deep.

“I’ve been a Pacers fan since, like, the early 2000s, pretty much since I was old enough to actually understand what basketball was,” Morris said.

However, his vision impairment keeps him from fully experiencing all the excitement.

“I can see the court and I can see movement that’s going on the court, but I wouldn’t be able to tell you, like, what player has the ball most of the time,” he said.

Now, the Pacers are partnering with nonprofit MindsEye to offer free live audio description services at 20 home games. They’re the first NBA team to do this.

Morris calls it a game changer.

“Now, with the audio description, I know what’s going on on the court, I know what’s going on, you know, in the stands during the timeouts, if there’s things that are going on the court. I’m actually able to see it and enjoy it and, you know, laugh along with the other fans,” Morris said

MindsEye President and CEO Jason Frazier said inclusivity and accessibility are the heart of the service.

“I remember going to a game, the wave was coming, and I noticed the whole section of blind (or) vision-impaired fans just sat there,” Frazier said.

During the game, Morris and other visually impaired fans use the Live Voice app on their phone and headphones to listen in to every moment.

The Pacers organization said the goal is to be as inclusive as possible. Morris said he hopes that feeling carries over to other teams.

“I think that would open a lot of doors, and, you know, it would lead to more groundbreaking experiences,” Morris said.

How it works

Visit the MindsEye website to sign up for upcoming audio description events or go to the Gainbridge Fieldhouse Guest Services Team in Section 2 when you arrive.

Download the free LiveVoice app to your mobile device before the game.

Bring your own headphones (there’s a limited number of headsets available at Gainbridge).

Once inside the event, the app will activate through a provided code and stream a live audio description synced to the game.
