Lucky Day Animal Rescue’s goat inspires children’s book

  • October 14, 2025

HOLLY, Mich. (WNEM) – The founder of a local sanctuary has written a book based on a rescued goat who lost his back legs and ears to frostbite.

The story of the goat named Artichoke, inspired Gretchen Sommer to write a new children’s book, Artichoke the Unstoppable Goat.

Artichoke arrived at the Lucky Day Animal Rescue in February after surviving severe frostbite. Despite his injuries, he refused to give up, according to Sommer. She added that with patience, care, and creativity, Artichoke learned to live fully again. He is grazing, playing, and thriving at the sanctuary.

“Artichoke reminds us that even when life looks different than we planned, we can still do amazing things,” Sommer said. ”He’s the perfect example of resilience and kindness.”

The book is now available on Amazon and IngramSpark.
