After missing Arizona State‘s game against Utah last Saturday night, star quarterback Sam Leavitt is reportedly likely to make his return to the gridiron this weekend against No. 7 Texas Tech. CBS Sports‘ Matt Zenitz broke the news Wednesday night.

Leavitt missed the game with a right foot injury, but has practiced every day this week, per On3’s Pete Nakos. In five games this season, the sophomore quarterback has passed for 1,039 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions.

Leavitt’s return is much anticipated, as the Sun Devils were walloped 42-10 by Utah in his absence. Veteran quarterback Jeff Sims got the start for Arizona State and was held to just 124 passing yards on 18/38 passing.

“Sam’s been battling something going back to Baylor (on Sept. 20),” head coach Kenny Dillingham said prior to the Utah game. “Bye week was good for him to get kind of back and this week it didn’t feel as good as we wanted to… If he plays in the game, it’ll be a mini miracle. I’d be shocked.”

He obviously did not end up playing in the game and the Sun Devils were slapped with their second loss of the season. Midway through their 2025 campaign, they sit at 4-2 overall with losses to Mississippi State and Utah.

Leavitt led Arizona State to its first ever appearance in the College Football Playoff last season. The Sun Devils were the No. 4 overall seed, but fell to No. 5 Texas 39-31 in 2OT in the Quarterfinals. In that game, he passed for 222 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

His return this weekend sets up a monstrous quarterback battle between Leavitt and Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton. That is, if Morton is available to play. He has been day-to-day since exiting last weekend’s win against Kansas.

Kick-off between No. 7 Texas Tech and Arizona State on Saturday in Tempe is scheduled for 4:00 PM ET. The game can be seen on FOX. It will mark the sixth ever meeting between the two programs. The Red Raiders knocked off the Sun Devils 30-22 last season, which marked one of Arizona State‘s two lone losses in the regular season.
