On Friday, WXII 12 News was unfortunately part of the story. Just before 2 p.m., a man rammed his SUV through our front gates on Coliseum Drive in Winston-Salem. Seconds later, he slammed into a parked news vehicle and then forced his way through our glass doors, shattering glass and damaging equipment inside. Our WXII 12 News team immediately took cover, barricading themselves and calling 911. Within moments, the Winston-Salem Police Department arrived and took the suspect into custody. His name has not been released. Investigators said the suspect did display “clear signs of a mental health crisis “and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Officers will consult with the Forsyth County District Attorney’s Office to determine if and what charges will be filed. Police said the suspect was not armed. Right now, investigators are still working to determine what his motivation was but said this does not appear to be a targeted act against WXII or our employees. Tonight, inside the newsroom, there is a shared sense of relief and resilience. We are grateful to the Winston-Salem Police Department and thankful that no one was physically injured.
