DETROIT – Dylan Larkin scored on a breakaway with 1:24 remaining in overtime and John Gibson bounced back with a 32-save performance Friday as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 at Little Caesars Arena.
The Red Wings (4-1-0) have won four in a row, capping a season-opening stretch of five games against Atlantic Division opponents.
The Red Wings led 1-0 most of the night on rookie Axel Sandin-Pellikka’s first career goal.
J.J. Moser tied it with 3:43 remaining in regulation, after Gibson, who faced 19 shots in the third period, made several big stops to protect the lead.
Larkin’s goal was his third of the season as he beat Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Lightning dropped to 1-2-2.
It was Gibson’s first appearance since being pulled in a 5-1 loss to Montreal eight days prior in the season opener. Detroit’s solid defense and strong penalty killing – Tampa Bay had no shots during three power plays – helped.
Sandin-Pellikka scored the only goal through two periods, converting at 13:02 of the first during a delayed penalty call. He fired a long wrist through a screen, the puck sailing between Mason Appleton’s skates.
The Red Wings wrap up a three-game homestand Sunday against Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers (3 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network).
