Kilauea produces record-breaking lava fountains in episode 35

  • October 18, 2025

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Kilauea put on a record-breaking light show with episode 35.

After a couple of days of bubbling and overflows, lava fountains began spewing from the north vent at about 8:05 p.m. Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Fountains from the south vent began at about 8:50 p.m. and grew rapidly, with lava from both vents feeding large flows on the floor of Halemaumau crater, USGS said.

At 10:11 p.m., USGS reported record-high fountains for this eruption at nearly 1,500 feet.

This marked the highest single fountain and highest pair of fountains seen during this eruption.

The plume of gas above the fountains extended to over 16,000 feet above ground level, and tephra was reported by Hawaii County Civil Defense falling on Highway 11 southwest of the vents.

Fine ash and Pele’s hair may impact a broad area of Kaʻu along the southern and southwestern parts of Mauna Loa.

As brilliant as Friday’s show was, the episode will likely be brief.

Scientists said the rapid tilt drop and very high output from both vents suggest the episode could last less than six to eight hours.
