The Minnesota Vikings have found themselves at a bit of a crossroads so far this season. The Vikings want to develop young quarterback J.J. McCarthy into the team’s long-term franchise quarterback, but the offense has looked better under veteran Carson Wentz, who has started in place of McCarthy since the young quarterback went down with a high ankle sprain.
There was some belief that McCarthy would return to the starting lineup on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles; however, Minnesota appears to have something else in mind for McCarthy.
“With J.J. McCarthy still recovering from his high ankle sprain, the Vikings once again will start QB Carson Wentz, who spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with Philadelphia,” reported ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter on Friday.
Schefter then reported on what McCarthy’s role will be on Sunday.
“Vikings QB Max Brosmer will serve as the backup for Carson Wentz against the Eagles and J.J. McCarthy will be the emergency 3rd QB.”
Fans reacted to the reports on social media.
“As soon as Wentz has a bad game all of a sudden JJ will be healthy,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“McCarthy is recovering from not being a good QB. Might be terminal,” someone else added.
“Shouldn’t have let Darnold go, d”D with Wentz,” one person wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see what head coach Kevin O’Conell does if Wentz has a strong showing on Sunday.
