Angel Reese is always a trending topic, but sometimes, it’s for the totally wrong reasons. During a segment of her podcast, “Unapologetically Angel,” the Chicago Sky star admitted being apprehensive about speaking with the media before and after some of her games, citing previous controversies where her words were misconstrued. As she continued, Reese revealed she’d prefer to pay hefty fines to the WNBA than have conversations with reporters she can’t trust.

“Even before the game, I’m terrified of what the media is about to ask. It could be the nicest question, but it’s going to get flipped or put into a different light and perspective,” Reese said.

“I don’t wanna do an interview with anybody,” she continued. “I’d rather take the fine sometimes rather than talking to the media.”

UNRIVALED

Reese’s comments come a little over a month after the WNBA standout sparked controversy in the league and in her locker room after sharing her hopes and desires for the Chicago Sky (who finished 10-34 this season) in 2026.

“I am very vocal about what we need and what I want. I’d like to be here for my career, but if things don’t pan out, obviously I might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me,” Reese said to local Chicago reporter Julia Poe, according to a previous report from The Blast.

As she continued, Reese was adamant about not “settling for the same sh-t we did this year” before emphasizing the importance of solidifying skilled players for the future.

“We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me. I’m willing and wanting to play with the best. And however I can help to get the best here, that’s what I’m going to do this offseason,” Reese said.

Reese’s statements caused quite a firestorm around the WNBA, and before they could spiral even more, the LSU alum acknowledged her statements during a post-game conference, apologizing for how her words might’ve affected her teammates.

“I’m probably frustrated with myself right now,” the LSU alum said before claiming her comments were used against her. “I think the language is taken out of context. I didn’t intentionally mean to put down my teammates because they’ve been through this with me throughout the whole season. They’ve busted their [butts] just like I busted my a-s. They showed up through thick and thin with me when nobody could see anything. I would apologize to my teammates, which I already have, about the article and how it was misconstrued.”

Days later, Reese’s name was in even more controversy after the Chicago Sky announced it was suspending its franchise player for a portion of a game due to the “detrimental” comments she made about the team.

And while many agreed that Reese’s comments were correct but ill-timed, the Chicago Sky faced intense backlash over its decision to suspend Reese, with several boycotting the team’s final games and others vowing to cancel their season ticket passes. An unnamed WNBA executive even spoke in support of Reese, urging the 23-year-old to find a new team to play for.

“She needs to get the h-ll out of there,” the source said, according to The Blast. “Chicago is probably the worst-run organization in the league. You’re gonna suspend your best player just because she’s putting pressure on you to get better? That was embarrassing to see.”

They ultimately said Reese “should request a trade” when off-season transactions begin.

Reese Is On Cloud Nine

Aside from the on-court drama, Reese has had an epic run since the season ended, launching her debut signature sneaker, releasing a new collection with Juicy Couture, and becoming the first professional athlete to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

“It’s such a surreal and full-circle moment — just last year I was in the audience manifesting being on that runway, completely inspired and in awe of all the powerful women walking down the runway, and now I get to return as an Angel. This will be an unforgettable night that I’ll forever be grateful for,” Reese said about her special moment.
