Rory McIlroy claimed his first professional play-off win in Asia just months after suffering a heart-breaking Masters collapse.

The world number two is aiming for another title in the continent this weekend at the inaugural staging for the India Championship.

His appearance once again comes after a notable Masters appearance for the Northern Irishman – who paraded the Green Jacket in front on Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar on Friday.

McIlroy completed the career Grand Slam at Augusta National back in April to end his 11-year wait for the achievement.

However, it was a very different story as he headed to Asia back in October 2011.

Back then, McIlroy triumphed over Anthony Kim in a play-off at the Shanghai Masters to scoop £1.24million in prize money.

His victory only came after he had surrendered a three-shot lead at the start of the final round.

McIlroy then missed a chance to win the tournament on the 18th hole as he squandered an eight-foot birdie putt.

Fortunately, he recovered to win the first play-off hole and see off Kim.

It was his maiden play-off win after losing in his previous two attempts at the European Masters and Hong Kong Open in 2008.

McIlroy now has seven play-off wins to his name including victories in his last five on the PGA Tour.

Speaking after Shanghai Masters win 14 years ago, McIlroy admitted: “I’ve been close in two or three tournaments and had two thirds and two seconds and was finally able to get myself over the line today.

“This was the third play-off of my career, and I was able to win this one, so at least my record in these events is getting better. I am just delighted to get another win.”

McIlroy’s 2011 Masters collapse

McIlroy’s triumph came just six months after his infamous Masters collapse earlier in the year.

He had held a four-shot lead after 54 holes in Georgia before an eight-over final round saw him tumble out of contention.

Instead, Charl Schwartzel claimed the green jacket, with McIlroy 10 shots back in a tie for 15th.

McIlroy has finally avenged that collapse after his win at Augusta in 2025.

He once again lost a 54-hole lead, though, before beating Ryder Cup team-mate Justin Rose in a play-off.

The 36-year-old will hope that win can remain a good omen for this weekend’s India Championship.

McIlroy is making his first appearance since last month’s European Ryder Cup triumph at Bethpage Black.

It is the first edition of the India Championship at the Delhi Golf Club.

The opening two rounds of the event saw McIlroy move inside the top 20 on six-under par.
