The ATP Tour is brimming with talent, and on Sunday, a situation occurred that serves to highlight exactly how demanding things can be.

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are the two top players in the world right now, with the players competing for the Six Kings Slam over the weekend.

Sinner praised Alcaraz after winning the $6 million prize money, but there are intriguing little subplots in world tennis, even further down the ranks.

Earlier today, two former top 10 players competed against each other in a qualifying match ahead of the Swiss Indoors, which gets underway this week.

Before the match started today, both players knew that they’d both be in the main draw as lucky losers, such was the number of players who withdrew from the event.

Cilic won the US Open in 2014 and has been as high as number three in the world rankings, whilst Goffin has been at a previous high of number seven.

It was the Croatian player who came through the match to qualify of his own accord, winning 6-1, 7-6, with Cilic showing strong form in the second half of 2025.

Remarkably, Cilic is down at 94 in the world at the moment and at 37-years-old he will be hoping to claim a few more big wins before his career draws to a close.

Bizarre situation now takes place involving Cilic and Goffin

With Goffin squeezing in through the back door as a lucky loser, he joins Cilic in the main draw to take his place at the Swiss Indoors.

Remarkably, however, the two have now drawn each other in the last 32, facing each other on Tuesday at the tournament.

Cilic and Goffin will need to play again, which pretty much makes the qualifying match completely pointless, to say the least.

It’s extremely rare for this to happen on the ATP Tour, and now, both players will feel that they have a fantastic chance to progress to the last 16 in Basel.

Both Cilic and Goffin will know that they have a golden chance this week and the match should be a very intriguing affair when they play on Tuesday.
