Jannik Sinner will not play for Italy in this year’s Davis Cup Finals. The world No. 2 and four-time Grand Slam champion helped propel his nation to victory in 2023 and 2024, but has not given his availability for 2025, according to captain Filippo Volandri.
“The Davis Cup is and will always remain his home, and I am certain that Jannik will return to be part of the squad soon,” Volandri said in a statement to Italian press. Italy’s team will comprise Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli and Matteo Berrettini for singles, with top doubles pair Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli uniting.
A representative for Sinner said that he was skipping the event to gain an extra week of preparation for the Australian Open, with which he will start his 2026 season. This will give Sinner close to two months off between seasons.
In an interview conducted in Italian with Sky Sport, Sinner said that “it is not a simple decision … The objective after Turin (the ATP Tour Finals) is to start again for 2026 on the on the right foot with Australia. One week seems like no big deal, but one week is very important.”
Sinner’s nearest ATP Tour rival, world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, will compete for Spain at the event, which begins November 18 in Bologna, Italy. Alcaraz will be joined by Jaume Munar, Pedro Martinez and Marcel Granollers, with the team’s fifth player yet to be picked.
The remaining teams include Germany, with No. 3 Alexander Zverev in its squad, and Czechia, with a formidable lineup including Jiří Lehečka, Jakub Menšík and Tomáš Macháč. Argentina, France, Belgium and Austria complete the field.
