That number is 61 fewer than at the same point in 2024. Over the last five years, an average of 353 people have been killed in statewide crashes annually.

One person was killed in a crash early Monday morning.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of a pickup truck veered off Highway 65 at Northeast 112th Street just before 4:30 a.m., and a fire started under the truck.

“Witnesses at the scene successfully extracted the sole occupant, an adult male, from the vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “Deputies, along with fire and rescue units from Mitchellville and Bondurant, initiated life-saving measures (on the unconscious man).
