Breaking down the new daily Memphis Safe Task Force surge data

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The City of Memphis debuted a new way to look at Memphis Police Department crime and arrest data in relation to the surge in federal law enforcement following the beginning of operations for the Memphis Safe Task Force.

The dataset can be found here.

It shows data recorded since October 1, two days after the Memphis Safe Task Force operational period began.

Below is a breakdown of each statistic to better analyze the data shown:

The top left chart highlights what has been the Memphis Safe Task Force’s primary objective: to arrest violent criminals with outstanding warrants.

This chart shows the total arrests made, categorized by felonies and misdemeanors. Mayor Paul Young says the numbers will likely differ from data shared by the U.S. Marshals Service.

This graph shows the downward trend in reported offenses since September compared to 2024. Each day is represented by a number, but the blue bar marks when the task force began operations.

The red line shows 2024’s number of offenses, while the blue line shows 2025. They are represented on the same graph, so the drop in offenses compared to last year is shown in the gap.

There are declines in every category, the steepest being the rate of motor vehicle thefts.

Like the previous chart, this compares data from October 2025 and 2024, showing the difference in call volume for MPD officers, sorted by priority.

Priority 0 represents the highest threat, where the risk to life and limb is greatest.
