Day 3 at the WTA 250 event in Guangzhou won’t exactly feature blockbuster matches on paper, as there are basically no top players in the draw, but it should provide plenty of exciting matches between players of similar levels and who will surely be sensing a great opportunity for a rare big run at this level and perhaps even a title.

WTA Guangzhou Day 3 Predictions
Lulu Sun vs Yafan Wang

Head-to-head: first meeting

It’s not every day you see a matchup between #116 and #332 at the WTA level event, especially already in the second round, but here we are after both players beat far higher ranked opponents in the first round, with Sun even taking out the tournament’s #1 seed. Both players will be extremely confident and motivated, and it should be a high quality match, decided by small details.
Prediction: Sun in 3

Xiyu Wang vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto

Head-to-head: Cocciaretto 2-1 Wang

This should be another very close match decided by small details, with both players having very similar levels and having played quite well in the first round to get to this stage. Cocciaretto leads the head-to-head but their last match was all the way back in May 2021, so their previous encounters will have little bearing tomorrow.
Prediction: Cocciaretto in 3

Shuai Zhang vs Veronika Erjavec

Head-to-head: first meeting

Despite being lower ranked, Zhang has been playing much better in this Asian swing and has the home advantage here, so she comes into this match as the favorite for sure. She has only lost to Top 5 opponents so far in Asia, showing that it takes a very high level performance to take her down right now. Given the field at this event, she could definitely go very far.
Prediction: Zhang in 2

Camila Osorio vs Ann Li

Head-to-head: Osorio 2-1 Li

Li is the highest ranked player left in the tournament and as such obviously one of the favorites to take the trophy home, but she has a very difficult draw here. These two faced in Beijing last month, with Osorio winning a very tight three-setter that went over three hours. A similarly tight match is to be expected here, with perhaps Li getting revenge for Beijing this time around.
Prediction: Li in 3
