WANA (Oct 24) – Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations said at a UN Security Council meeting that the illegal military presence and destabilizing actions of the United States have intensified conflicts and instability in the region. He added that the real source of regional instability — namely the United States and its unconditional support for Israel as its proxy — has enabled the continuation of that regime’s aggression, crimes, and occupation.
Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, delivered a statement during the Security Council session on “The Situation in the Middle East: The Question of Palestine.” He said the Israeli occupying regime has become a clear and serious threat to regional and international peace and security.
Iravani added that the people of Gaza have for two years endured an unprecedented, all-out war of extermination waged by the regime. During this period, Israel has conducted systematic, indiscriminate, and disproportionate bombardments against innocent civilians. More than 68,000 innocent Palestinians have been killed, thousands remain missing, and over 20,000 children have lost their lives. All essential infrastructure has been destroyed — hospitals, schools, and water systems have been reduced to rubble. Gaza, he said, has effectively become a land of devastation.
He stressed that this grim reality is living proof of total impunity. Now that the military operations in Gaza have ended, the world is only beginning to grasp the full extent of the catastrophe left behind.
The Iranian representative noted that Israel’s aggression and criminal actions are not limited to Gaza. The Islamic Republic of Iran itself has been directly targeted by Israel’s attacks. Between June 13 and June 24, 2025, Israel carried out large-scale, unprecedented assaults on residential areas, hospitals, and peaceful nuclear facilities under full IAEA supervision — without any provocation or pretext. As a result of these indiscriminate and unlawful attacks, 1,100 innocent civilians, including 132 women and 45 children, were killed, and more than 5,700 others were injured.
Iravani emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran supports any credible and effective initiative aimed at ending the genocide in Gaza, ensuring the full withdrawal of occupying forces, establishing a permanent ceasefire, facilitating unhindered humanitarian aid, and restoring the inalienable and fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.
He continued: Ending the war against the people of Gaza — though essential — does not absolve member states and competent international bodies of their shared legal, moral, and humanitarian obligations to achieve justice and accountability. True justice requires full accountability. The perpetrators and architects of war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity must be prosecuted, and the longstanding culture of impunity surrounding the Israeli regime must finally come to an end.
The senior Iranian diplomat firmly rejected the baseless claims made by the U.S. representative, stating that Iran’s foreign policy is rooted in the principles of the UN Charter — including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in the internal affairs of others, and good-neighborliness.
He stressed that it is, in fact, the illegal military presence and destabilizing actions of the United States that have fueled conflicts and instability in the region.
Iravani added that Iran has always shown its readiness for fair and genuine dialogue. Moreover, he said, the false narrative of so-called “Iranian proxies” is a deliberate attempt to divert attention from the real source of regional instability — namely, the United States and its unconditional support for its proxy in the region, the Israeli regime, which has perpetuated aggression, atrocities, and occupation.
He concluded by saying that through its repeated obstruction of the Security Council’s duties under the UN Charter, the United States has made itself complicit in these crimes and bears direct legal and moral responsibility for their continuation.
