Lawsuit over ICE facility in McCook, crash on Dodge Street, Valley recall election

  • October 24, 2025

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – First Alert 6 has the headlines you need to know to get your Friday started.

One in hospital after crash on Dodge Street in Omaha early Friday

One person is injured after a crash in Omaha late Thursday.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. Thursday, police were called to the crash near 69th and Dodge streets.

Police dispatch confirmed with First Alert 6 that one person was taken to the hospital following the crash.

Man injured after shooting in North Omaha

A man is in the hospital after a shooting in North Omaha early Friday.

Omaha police officers responded to the shooting just after 2 a.m. Friday near 20th and Ohio streets.

OPD tells First Alert 6 on the scene the victim is a 56-year-old man that has a gunshot wound to the right forearm.

The man appeared to be stable as he was being taken to the hospital, according to police.

Hearing on lawsuit over planned ICE facility in McCook happening Friday

There will be a hearing on a lawsuit over the new immigration detention center in Nebraska on Friday.

The lawsuit is being filed to prevent the repurposing of the Work Ethic Camp in the project. It was filed by Nebraska Appleseed on behalf of former State Sen. DiAnna Schimek and 13 residents of McCook on Oct. 15, court records show.

A district judge in Red Willow County will hear arguments on the request Friday.

The hearing will come a day after Governor Jim Pillen’s office said the facility had a final walk-through by inspectors this week. It’s scheduled opening date is Nov. 1.

It will hold up to 300 detainees after all the Nebraska inmates were relocated to other facilities or put on parole.

Pillen’s office says officials are still working on an exact timeline for when the facility starts receiving detainees.

Last day to register for Valley special recall election Friday

Friday is the last day to register for next month’s special recall election in Valley.

You can register in-person at the Douglas County Election Commission near 120th and Center until 6 p.m. Friday.

Voters have until November 4 to mail their ballots back to the election commission, or put it in a ballot drop box. The ballots came in 6 inch by 9 inch “Kraft-colored” envelopes, and a return envelope was included in the ballot.

There were 689 verified signatures needed to prompt a recall election for Mayor Cindy Grove and 367 to remove City Council President John Batcher from office.

In the petition, Jensen alleges Grove violated open meeting laws and created a hostile work environment. It also calls her leadership into question. Batcher is accused of putting special interests ahead of his job as a public servant.

Groundbreaking set for Omaha North HS stadium, YMCA upgrade Friday

On Friday, there will be a groundbreaking for the new high school stadium and YMCA building in North Omaha.

Butler-Gast YMCA, located near 35th Street and Ames Avenue, will get upgraded as part of a joint project organizers say is “fully funded and underway.”

Project Game On, set for completion in Summer 2027, will include construction of a football, soccer, and lacrosse, stadium for Omaha North High School on a portion of the same property.

The marching band, drum line, drill teams, step team, JROTC, and other activities will also move into the new stadium.

World boxing champion and Omaha native Terence “Bud” Crawford made an appearance at the announcement of the project to show his support.

Friday’s groundbreaking will go from 10-11 a.m. at 4344 N. 34th Ave. in Omaha.

Nebraska football to take on Northwestern at home

Husker football will be back at it Saturday with a home game against Northwestern.

Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. Central time, with the game broadcast on FS1.

Nebraska is coming of a 1-1 road stretch, ending with a disappointing showing against Minnesota last Friday.

Northwestern will be coming in with a four game win streak, most recently besting the Purdue Boilermakers in a shutout.
