Brittney Griner was in an all-too-familiar position, just like Jarred Shaw.
Shaw is facing life-changing penalties for his alleged importation of a controlled substance in another country.
In a case reminiscent of WNBA player Brittney Griner’s high-profile Russian imprisonment, the former US college basketball star playing in Indonesia is facing the ultimate penalty for allegedly illegally importing cannabis gummies to his residence.
Unlike Griner, he could actually die for what he did.
Shaw, who played for Oklahoma State and Utah State, was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into the country.
“I was having a rough patch during the [2025 IBL] season, and I had the package sent,” Shaw said.
“I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong. I had no idea about the laws here.
“I understand I made a mistake, and I’m sorry. I just want to get out of here. I want to go home.”
Unfortunately for him, he might have the United States on his side to save him like Brittney Griner did. The American basketball player is currently facing the death penalty in Indonesia.

“The United States literally traded a global war machine arms dealer back to the Kremlin for Brittney Griner. Send Indonesia some money and get Jarred Shaw back. This is idiotic,” one fan said.
“Just like the Griner situation, if you go to another country, you need to respect their laws,” a second fan wrote.
“Damn. Tbh idk how people did learn from the Brittany Griner situation💀🤦♂️sorry for em,” a third fan added.
“But we just watched Brittany griner get jailed for years for a cartridge. Im sure it’s spoken about by the org and i doubt he missed that whole story. Yes different country but wouldn’t you look up the law?” one fan fan said.
Russian officials detained Brittney Griner for allegedly having trace amounts of cannabis oil in her luggage. She was later sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison on drug smuggling charges and was transferred to a Russian penal colony where she was set to serve out the rest of her sentence.
After a few months locked up, President Joe Biden announced that the administration had brokered a deal with Russia for a prisoner swap: Brittney would return home in exchange for the convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
