On Tuesday, Samuel Adams announced it is releasing a “barrel-aged extreme beer” called Utopias.
Utopias 2025 is “one of the strongest beers ever brewed,” and the shocking ABV means it’s illegal in 15 states, the company said.
The strong drink is bottled in individually numbered ceramic vessels and is meant to be sipped and tasted like liquor.
It’s also the cost of a fine wine, with the suggested retail price of $240.

Samuel Adams’ CEO Jim Koch explained that Utopias was developed as part of an ongoing effort to revolutionize the beer brewing process.
“When we first began the Utopias journey over thirty years ago, we set out to explore the limited of what beer could be,” he said in a statement.
“Reaching 30% ABC is a remarkable milestone for Utopias – not for the number itself, but for what it represents: the relentless pursuit of craft without compromise.
“Every vintage, barrel, and bottle reflects decades of experimentation, innovation, and collaboration, delivering a sipping experience that is truly unparalleled, collectible, memorable, and worth the wait.”
Utopias is barrel-aged in several different types of whiskey barrels, which Samuel Adams says gives the beverage a distinct character.
Every cask has been treated with Ruby Port, Carcavelos, Cognac, Scotch, Irish Whiskey, Amarone, or White Port.
The Irish Whiskey brings “notes of toasted oak and warm vanilla,” Amarone adds “rich, wine-soaked fruit depth,” and White Port “imparts a delicate honeyed sweetness.”
Samuel Adams fans who want to get their hands on a bottle may have more difficulties than they think.
According to the brewer’s website, bottles of Utopias are only released every other year.
There’s no clear indication as to where they’re sold – however, the company says to check specialty beer, wine, and liquor stores.
“It’s tough to find. Good luck,” writes the brewer.
Utopias cannot be sold in the following states:
Alabama
Arkansas
Georgia
Idaho
Missouri
Mississippi
Montana
New Hampshire
North Carolina
Oklahoma
Oregon
South Carolina
Utah
Vermont
West Virginia
