You can count Colin Cowherd among those who have enjoyed Stephen Colbert’s work in late-night television.

Last week, CBS made the shocking announcement that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be ending its run in May 2026 after more than a decade. The news comes with the program reportedly in dire financial straits but also shortly after Colbert slammed CBS’ parent company Paramount over its settlement of a lawsuit involving President Donald Trump, who Colbert has been staunchly critical of.

The Late Show’s cancellation has sparked a variety of reactions, with Cowherd interjecting his thoughts on Sunday.

“Regarding Stephen Colbert — Carson produced a show for the country. Letterman’s show often felt like a inside joke. I LOVED both,” Cowherd said. “Modern shows, too often, feel like they’re producing shows for the coastal critics approval, hoping the @NewYorker [heaps] praise.”

Colbert, 61, has built a legion of fans dating back to his days on Comedy Central, but The Late Show was reportedly losing $40 million annually.

In its statement announcing the news, CBS said the decision was “strictly financial” and “not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

“‘THE LATE SHOW with STEPHEN COLBERT’ will end its historic run in May 2026 at the end of the broadcast season,” the company said. “We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire ‘THE LATE SHOW’ franchise at that time. We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.”

“Our admiration, affection, and respect for the talents of Stephen Colbert and his incredible team made this agonizing decision even more difficult,” the statement added. “With much gratitude, we look forward to honoring Stephen and celebrating the show over the next 10 months alongside its millions of fans and viewers.”
