UPDATE: Joe Jonas has seemingly responded to criticism.

MLB and Mastercard paused the Los Angeles Dodgers-Toronto Blue Jays game for their annual Stand Up to Cancer initiative, honoring those impacted by cancer as fans held signs with the names of loved ones across the stadium.

Per MLB: “As has been tradition since 2009, the in-stadium Stand Up to Cancer placard moment, in partnership with Mastercard, aired live on FOX. Players, umpires, managers, coaches and fans held up signs honoring loved ones affected by cancer – those who have survived, those currently in the fight and those who have succumbed to the disease.”

But the tribute took a surprising turn when the broadcast cut to a performance by the group of “I Can’t Lose,” delivered after the fifth inning. While some praised the effort to blend awareness with entertainment, others called it awkward and out of place.

“As Stand Up to Cancer ambassadors, Jonas Brothers helped elevate awareness of the cause with ‘I Can’t Lose,’ honoring everyone affected by the disease and celebrating the triumph of beating it,” MLB.com said.

The group’s connection to the cause is personal: their dad Kevin Sr. was diagnosed with Stage II colon cancer in 2017, and later went into remission. Even so, viewers questioned whether the pop-up performance met the moment during a typically solemn segment.
