Coyotes Spotted Across Ramapo: DEC Guidance for Residents
By Akivah W.
Residents of Ramapo are being urged to exercise caution after multiple coyote sightings were reported throughout the town. The Ramapo Police Department confirmed the sightings and emphasized the importance of being prepared, especially in light of recent coyote incidents in nearby Bergen County.
Coyotes are a natural part of New York State’s ecosystem. While most shy away from human contact, experts warn that those that lose their fear of people can pose risks to small pets and children.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) provides guidelines for safely handling coyote encounters and minimizing attractions on private property. Residents are encouraged to secure trash, supervise pets outdoors, and avoid leaving pet food outside.

The Ramapo Police Department stressed that while coyotes generally avoid humans, awareness and preventive measures are key to reducing potential conflicts.
