Chris Gotterup took another major step forward in his budding golf career with a stunning performance at the British Open, where an all-time performance from the world’s best kept him from earning an unforgettable victory.
The former Rutgers golfer finished in third place in the 153rd edition of the sport’s oldest tournament, which was held this weekend at Royal Portrush Golf Club. Gotterup shot xx-under-par across his four days in Northern Ireland, staying among the top 10 on the leaderboard for a majority of the competition.
He shot six-under-par on Friday to not only make the cut but put himself in contention for the title, but he was unable to keep up with Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1 who won the competition by four strokes with an otherworldly 17-under-par finish.
After standing alone in second place for much of the afternoon Sunday, Gotterup was caught by Harris English, who surpassed him to take second place in the competition.
Gotterup’s showing at the British Open — his third career appearance at a major tournament — is the latest step forward in his budding career. He qualified for the tournament by winning the Scottish Open last weekend, fending off a challenge from all-time great Rory McIlroy to earn his second PGA Tour title; his first came at Myrtle Beach last year.
With his third place finish, Gotterup — who graduated from Rutgers in 2021 before concluding his college career at Oklahoma — won $1,128,000, adding to the career earnings of $4,343,333 that he entered the weekend with.
