Newcastle United are tracking FC Porto ace Samu Aghehowa – according to reports in Portugal this weekend.
The 21-year-old star is also attracting interest from Newcastle’s Premier League rivals following some sparkling form last season when he netted 25 goals across all competitions. Both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are credited with recent interest in Aghehowa after scouting missions across in Liga Portugal.
Porto have inserted an £87million release clause in his contract knowing that interest in the Spain international is growing on the Continent. Porto need to protect themselves as his former club Atletico Madrid own 50% of his transfer rights.
Aghehowa has eight goals to his name so far this season and a smattering of scouts from English clubs were at the City Ground last week for Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 win over Porto in the Europa League.
It wasn’t a great night for Samu in front of some of his admirers, but his stock continues to rise and three-times Spanish international is doing himself no harm by getting his numbers up with 45 senior goals to his name at just 21.
Newcastle aren’t short on strikers with Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa and Anthony Gordon all capable of leasding the line. But Wissa’s early injury at United and the fact that Woltemade and Gordon are having their minutes managed indicate further firepower is required in Eddie Howe’s squad.

Not for the first time, Newcastle have been credited with interest in Middlesbrough star Hayden Hackney.
The 23-year-old has been looked at by Manchester United this year too but no top-flight side has yet taken the plunge on the Redcar-born midfielder. Currently part of Boro’s promotion-challenging side, Hackney has two years to run on his current deal at the Riverside.
Hackney rejected a move to fellow Championship outfit Ipswich Town last summer, and those close to him insist that if he is to leave his local club, it has to be for the chance to play at the top level, something that could yet be achieved with the Teessiders.
Juventus star could come in useful for Newcastle
A trawl through the Italian newspapers this weekend showed another link with Juventus for the Magpies. The two teams are no strangers to each other after Lloyd Kelly was sold to the Turin club last season while Sandro Tonali remains a target – albeit an unrealistic on – on Juve’s radar.
But now the Serie A club’s French defender Pierre Kalulu is deemed a target of the Magpies, according to Italian journalists. At 25, Kalulu represents the type of star who could step on to the Premier League stage and do a job straight away and United would not be buying potential.
Notably, the centre-half can also operate at right-back, which is an area Newcastle are keeping tabs on. A fee of £26m has been mooted for Kalulu and with question marks over the future of Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles he could fit the bill for a summer transfer.
