Things continue to go well for Black Phone 2 at the box office. While Sony’s Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc topped the charts this past weekend with $17.2 million, director Scott Derrickson’s sequel to 2022’s The Black Phone managed to stay strong with $13 million in its second frame. With that, it becomes – by far – Blumhouse’s biggest movie of 2025 thus far.

After two weekends, Black Phone 2 has now surpassed the $80 million mark globally. Against a reported $30 million budget, that already makes it a success and the movie still has a lot of gas in the tank. The film has earned $49 million domestically to go with $31.3 million overseas for a grand total of $80.4 million and counting. The sequel topped the charts in its first weekend with $27 million, dropping 52% in its second weekend. For a horror movie, that’s pretty good.

The sequel centers on Finn (Mason Thames) and Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), who are both struggling after their brush with The Grabber (Ethan Hawke), who has been dead for a few years now. Gwen begins having strange visions in her dreams and convinces Finn to visit a winter camp with her, one that has ties to their family, seeking to solve a deadly mystery. The Grabber is there waiting for them from beyond the grave.

It’s a sigh of relief for Blumhouse Productions, as the house that Jason Blum built has been having a rough year up to this point. The studio previously released Wolf Man ($34 million worldwide) in January, The Woman in the Yard ($23 million worldwide) in March, Drop ($28 million worldwide) in April and M3GAN 2.0 ($39 million worldwide) in June. M3GAN 2.0 was easily the biggest disappointment of the bunch, given that the first movie made more than $180 million worldwide.

Most likely by the end of Halloween, Black Phone 2 will become the first Blumhouse title to cross the $100 million mark worldwide since Five Nights at Freddy’s in late 2023, with the video game adaptation making just shy of $300 million. It ranks as Blumhouse’s biggest global grosser by a considerable margin. Ever since, the studio has been on a hit/miss streak, with the misses far outweighing the hits. In short, this win was sorely needed.

The good news is that Blumhouse should end the year on a high note as Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 arrives in December. It’s difficult to say how much money that will bring in but the sky is truly the limit. The first movie was released on Peacock the same day it hit theaters and still did gangbusters business. With an exclusive theatrical release and a built-in global audience, it could be huge.

Elsewhere in horror box office news, Chris Stuckmann’s Shelby Oaks debuted with $2.3 million, good enough for number seven on the charts for the weekend. While it’s not going to be a breakout hit for NEON like Longlegs was last year, it’s a good enough start for the buzzy low-budget feature. With any luck, it can hang around for a few weeks before making its way to VOD.
