Mychal Thompson always had high hopes for his middle son, Klay, to make it to the NBA. That’s why he was with him every step of the way throughout his basketball journey, trying to make sure that he stayed on the right path to success.

Naturally, it wasn’t surprising that the former Los Angeles Lakers forward was furious when Klay was arrested for marijuana possession during his junior season at Washington State.

“This disappoints me highly,” said Mychal on his ESPN radio show. “I thought I had warned him and his brothers, Mychel and Trayce, about this stuff so many times since they were in the fifth and sixth grade. I wonder, ‘Where did we fail? Where did I fail? We talked to him all the time about the temptations.”

“It ain’t mine”

Klay was driving his car after Washington State’s 85-77 win over USC when Pullman police pulled him over because of a broken headlight. While talking to Thompson, the officer noticed the odor of marijuana from his car, which prompted a search.

The policeman said Klay denied at first that there was marijuana inside his vehicle. But when the office found 1.95 grams inside a bag, the Washington State star refused to admit it was his.

“He said, ‘It ain’t mine,'” Mychal added. “Doesn’t matter. It’s in his car. Marijuana is in the car, it’s his car, the marijuana is his as far as I’m concerned. Plain and simple. That’s the way the law looks at it.”

“This is what this Klay idiot has done. He has put the whole school, the whole program and its season success in jeopardy! Don’t you think this is going to hurt your reputation? …. Your draft status?” he added.

Klay looked back on the incident

There were reports that the Golden State Warriors were hesitant to draft Thompson because of that incident, but ultimately, they took a gamble and selected him 11th overall in 2011. The gamble paid off as he, alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green — and Kevin Durant for two years — led the Warriors to four NBA championships.

In 2022, Klay looked back on that incident during an appearance on the “All The Smoke” podcast.

“I’ve got a nice little sac of marijuana on me. It’s gonna be a decent night: play Rock Band and just chill out. And in the car, I see these flashing lights, and I’m like, ‘No way, what’s going on?’ Literally right when I get in my driveway. I’m like, ‘Ohhh’. And they’re like, ‘Sir, you have a broken taillight and we smell marijuana. Can you get out of the car?’ I’m like, ‘Don’t you need a warrant for that?’ And they’re like, ‘We can get one.’ And I’m like, ‘Whatever, man, just search the car,'” he recalled.

“I’m upset, and they put me in cuffs. I’m like, ‘For a bag of weed?’ They put me in the back of the car, but they didn’t take me downtown… They put me in the back, and I’m like, ‘God, my parents are gonna be so upset. They’re gonna be so disappointed. Gosh,” Thompson added.

Disappointed was an understatement as Mychal spewed fire for days against his son on his radio show. He was months away from following in his footsteps, and he almost blew it.

Luckily for both Thompsons, that wasn’t the case.
