A plane crashed in Kenya’s coastal region of Kwale early Tuesday while en route to Maasai Mara National Reserve.

All 12 people on board were feared dead, officials said.

The plane crashed minutes after takeoff in a hilly and forested area about 25 miles from Diani airstrip. Rescuers found a charred wreckage at the scene, officials said.

Local reports stated the plane was a 5Y-CCA aircraft and that a family of eight was on board.

Maasai Mara National Reserve is a popular tourist destination and features the annual wildebeest migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania.

“Government agencies are already on site to establish the cause of the accident and its impact,” the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement.
