Authorities in the Slate Belt area of Northampton County are warning residents about multiple raccoons that were found to have rabies.

There have been approximately five cases of rabies in the area within the past few weeks, according to a Facebook post from the Slate Belt Regional Police Department.

Police note that rabies can be spread to feral cats and other wildlife easily.

Do not attempt to touch, approach, or trap any animal behaving oddly, and do not feed wildlife, police say.

Police say people should monitor the feeding of outdoor cats. Never leave the food out overnight, police said.
