KEWAUNEE COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) – The Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Office wants you to be aware of the increase in deer movement right now.
The county’s communications center says so far this year it’s had 259 deer-related crashes. Last year at this time there were 184.
This follows a similar, recent warning from the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The sheriff’s office says it’s that time of year when deer are more actively moving between territories.
AVOIDING DEER
Deer are unpredictable. Remember to stay alert.
Use your high beams when appropriate.
Make sure you always buckle up.
While watching the road, if you see one deer cross watch for more that could be following it.
Honk your horn to get them to move.
IF YOU HIT A DEER
If you can’t avoid hitting a deer, brake firmly to reduce speed. Don’t swerve, because that can lead to losing control and a more serious crash.
When reporting a deer-related crash, it’s important to pull over to a safe location. Move your vehicle to the side of the road to avoid another crash as drivers approach you.
Stay in your vehicle. Wait for law enforcement to get there. It’s not safe to get out and approach an injured deer.
You’ll want to report the collision to police to get an official report, especially if damage exceeds $1,000.
Call 911 if someone is hurt or if the deer or its remains are blocking traffic.
