Oct. 28 (UPI) — A never-before-seen manuscript by the famed Dr. Seuss has been discovered and will soon be published by Random House Children’s Books.
The work, titled Sing the 50 United States!, was found earlier this year in the archives of UC San Diego’s Geisel Library in California. The manuscript and cover sketches by Theodor Seuss Geisel — better known as Dr. Seuss — were announced Tuesday by Random House.
“Uncovering a new work from Ted is like finding a time capsule of his imagination,” said Susan Brandt, president and CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises.
Sing the 50 United States! is set to be released June next year with a first printing of 500,000 copies. It invites readers to “learn and name all fifty states together with the iconic Cat in the Hat and two Little Cat helpers,” according to Random House.
Brandt said it celebrates Geisel’s “boundless creativity, genius with words and enduring ability to inspire young readers everywhere.”
In addition, Dr. Seuss Enterprises will also release a special music video for the Dr. Seuss YouTube channel.
“We’re honored to share this new Dr. Seuss treasure with readers across America during such a meaningful milestone year,” said Brandt.
Geisel died in 1991 in California aged 87.
In 2021, Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced it would end publishing six specific Seuss books due to “hurtful and wrong” portrayals after expert reviews.
In 2015, Geisel’s What Pet Should I Get was discovered.
“Finding an original Dr. Seuss story is something we dream of,” added Judith Haut, RHCB’s EVP and deputy publisher who oversees the Dr. Seuss publishing unit.
