The Boston Celtics have picked up the $2.74 million third-year option on Baylor Scheierman’s contract, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. That decision will keep Scheierman under contract until the end of the 2026-27 season. However, Boston does have another team option for the 2027-28 campaign, although that year would cost the Celtics $4.9 million.
Scheierman showed flashes of his undoubted upside toward the end of the 2024-25 season. His versatility, especially with the ball in his hands, is perfect for a potential utility player off the bench. Scheierman can pass, dribble, rebound, defend multiple positions and score across multiple levels. Unfortunately, he struggled during the Las Vegas Summer League and has yet to find his rhythm to begin the new season.

By picking up the first of his two team options, Scheierman is receiving a vote of confidence from the coaching staff and front office. Of course, Boston is also ensuring they have a cost-controlled asset to continue developing. Nevertheless, the news should help rebuild some of the Creighton product’s confidence. For now, though, Scheierman will likely continue to battle for playing time in Joe Mazzulla’s young and unproven rotation.
Since being drafted in the summer of 2024, Scheierman has played in 35 NBA games, averaging 3.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1 assist on 35.4% shooting from the field. Clearly, there is work that needs to be done. Fortunately for him, this season is the ideal time to play through mistakes and begin rounding out his game and adjusting to the pace and physicality in the NBA.
If Scheierman can build on his flashes of promise and translate his all-around skill set into consistent production, he could carve out a meaningful role in Boston’s second unit. Either way, the Celtics’ decision signals they believe his development is worth the investment.
