MONTMORENCY COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will burn 75 acres in Montmorency County Thursday.

The burn is expected to start around 12 p.m. in Vienna Township.

It’s intended to set back woody plants and invasive species.

The DNR also said a variety of wildlife should benefit, including elk, deer, turkey, woodcock, grouse and the threatened Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake.

Prescribed burns are one way the DNR keeps lands and forests healthy.

Prescribed burns are conducted by highly trained DNR personnel in designated state-managed areas, in cooperation with the proper authorities and local units of government.

Crews will be monitoring the weather and wind conditions, which could lead to last minute cancellation of the burn.
