Dylan Strome could potentially return to the lineup for the Washington Capitals as soon as tonight.
Strome was a full participant in the team’s morning skate, but head coach Spencer Carbery was unwilling to say whether he’d be good to go against the New York Islanders on Friday night. The 28-year-old center has already missed one game with a lower-body injury that he suffered early in a loss to the Ottawa Senators last weekend.
“We’ll see,” Carbery said. “Got to talk to the medical staff and we’ll see for tonight.”
Strome practiced with the team on Thursday, starting the day in a no-contact jersey before eventually switching to a regular red practice sweater during power-play drills. After suffering the injury early against the Senators, the Capitals’ number-one pivot did not travel for the club’s 1-0 loss to the Dallas Stars earlier this week.
While the Capitals may quickly get Strome back, the same cannot be said for defenseman Rasmus Sandin, who remained in a no-contact jersey on Friday morning. Carbery doesn’t expect Sandin to play against the Islanders or the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.
“Yeah, he’s probably a little bit further away than I would say Stromer, just based on non-contact still,” Carbery said. “I would say it’s highly likely that he’s out for the weekend.”
Logan Thompson was the first goaltender off the ice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, so he is set for the Halloween night start against New York. On the season, Thompson is 5-2 with a 1.44 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage. He made 34 saves on 36 shots in a 4-2 win against the Islanders earlier this month.
The Islanders currently sit last in the Eastern Conference with a 4-5-1 record, losing two games in a row to the Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes. They played in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Thursday night, so they’ll be completing a back-to-back in DC.
After placing Ethen Frank on injured reserve, the Capitals are carrying just 22 players on their roster. The team could recall a player from the AHL’s Hershey Bears before heading up to Buffalo this weekend.
