When the Boston Celtics started the 2025-26 NBA season on a 0-3 losing streak after dropping games to the Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, and Detroit Pistons to start their current campaign, a certain subset of the team’s fan base began to clamor for the storied ball club to lean into the tank, er — rebuild.

But then the Celtics answered their rough start with a pair of wins against the New Orleans Pelicans and Cleveland Cavaliers, putting a damper on that subset hoping to see AJ Dybansta drafted by Boston for at least the short term. But even apart from how the Celtics have played early this season, is there a case to be made that improving Boston’s lottery odds is the smartest move regardless?
