Rochester, N.Y. — The University of Rochester announced on Saturday that a transformational gift of $3 million from Abby and Doug Bennett, in partnership with the Sands Family Foundation, will support efforts to make the Memorial Art Gallery free of charge to the public forever.
The Bennett’s and the foundation have committed $3 million to establish the Abby and Doug Bennett and Sands Family Foundation Free for All Endowment.
“Right now, it costs $20 to enter the museum if you’re not a member and we’re looking to do away with that so that admission will be free for everyone as soon as they raise enough money for the endowment and we had the good fortune to be able to contribute towards that endowment and offer the first initial chunk of $3 million,” said donor Abby Bennett.
Officials say that once the museum raises $6 million for this initiative, it can permanently offer free admission to all visitors.
