MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -A monkey sighting was reported in Clarke County earlier this afternoon.
This was said to have been related to the escaped monkeys that resulted from a truck turnover in Jasper County earlier this week.
Clarke County deputies, Mississippi Game and Fish and an animal control unit responded to the area of Highway 513 just a mile west of the I-59 ramp.
News 11 has yet to confirm the sighting, but Sheriff Anthony Chancellor spoke with us on scene and told us how one should proceed in the event of a monkey encounter.
“Don’t try to approach it, don’t try to catch it, or anything like that,” Chancellor said. “Please don’t shoot the monkey or anything of that nature. But I would say this: if possible, if it is a safe area for an individual to pull over, if they could call it in to our dispatch, at (601) 776-1385 – or they can simply just call 911. And if they could, if at all possible, if they could hang out where they are, stay in their vehicle, and keep their eyes on the monkey until one of our deputies arrives on scene, that would be an ideal situation there.”
At this time, there’s been no confirmation that any monkeys were captured.
