Nottingham Forest have confirmed a number of supporters were on the train on which a mass stabbing took place between Doncaster and London on Saturday.
Forest said many of the club’s London-based fans were travelling back on the train after their Premier League fixture at home to Manchester United at the City Ground, which kicked off at 3pm (GMT). The club did not confirm if any of their supporters were injured during the incident.
British Transport Police said on Sunday that two individuals had been arrested by armed Cambridgeshire Police on suspicion of attempted murder but one was released after they confirmed that he was not involved. One patient, an LNER worker, remains in life-threatening condition in hospital. His actions were described by police as “nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved many people’s lives”.
Eleven people were treated in hospital and while nine individuals were initially believed to have life-threatening injuries, following assessment and treatment, five have been discharged. Police said there was nothing to suggest it was a terrorist incident.
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis said the club would provide financial support to any supporters caught up in the incident to enable them access to medical care.
A Nottingham Forest statement read: “Many of our London-based supporters were travelling home on that train following our match at the City Ground, and our thoughts are very much with everyone caught up in such a distressing incident.
“The club is aware that many individuals demonstrated extraordinary bravery which undoubtedly helped prevent even greater harm. The entire Nottingham Forest family stands firmly behind them as they recover from the events of yesterday.”
Police said they were called at 7:52pm (GMT) to reports of multiple stabbings onboard the train travelling between Doncaster and Kings Cross station in London. The train made an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire and police and paramedics attended the scene.
Police confirmed later on Sunday that a 32-year-old man, a black British national, remains in custody for questioning and is being treated as the only suspect. He comes from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.
