Carlos Mazon, the embattled leader of Spain’s Valencia region, announced his resignation on Monday, nearly a year after devastating floods claimed more than 230 lives, the country’s deadliest natural disaster in decades.
“The reality is that today I am the focus of criticism, noise, hatred, and tension… I can’t go on anymore,” Mazon said in a televised address. He had long resisted mounting pressure to step down over his government’s handling of the October 2024 catastrophe.
