The two finalists for the Colorado Rockies’ head of baseball operations job — Arizona Diamondbacks assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaye and Cleveland Guardians assistant general manager Matt Forman — are no longer in the running for the position, multiple league sources told The Athletic on Monday.
Sawdaye, who was at Coors Field for his final interview last Monday, was believed to be the favorite of the two. It’s unclear how close the sides came to having Sawdaye preside over a Rockies team that went 43-119 in 2025 in a National League West division he’s very familiar with.
Forman was in Colorado the week before Sawdaye for his final in-person interview.
What transpired to prompt the Rockies to move in another direction is unclear, but league sources confirmed there were no other finalists for the job as of last week, meaning the Rockies have to reopen their search. It wasn’t immediately known whether the process would involve executives previously linked to the job, such as the Kansas City Royals’ Scott Sharp, the Toronto Blue Jays’ James Click and Thad Levine.
The Rockies had hoped to announce a new head of baseball operations last week. Their new hiring timetable is not known, though the general managers’ meetings begin next week in Las Vegas.
The Rockies’ search is being led by Walker Monfort, though owner Dick Monfort has been involved in the interviewing process, league sources say.
A notoriously insular club, the team stated last month that the search for former GM Bill Schmidt’s replacement would be focused outside of the organization. Colorado held true to its word, spending weeks whittling down its list and conducting external interviews in October before homing in on Sawdaye and Foreman.
The Rockies haven’t made the playoffs since 2018 and have not advanced past the Division Series since they went to the World Series (and lost) in 2007.
