Michigan’s blue line has suffered a substantial loss.
The second-ranked Wolverines (9-1, 2-0 Big Ten) announced Monday that freshman defenseman Henry Mews is out for the rest of the season after suffering an injury in Saturday’s 2-1 overtime win over Notre Dame.
The 2024 third-round pick of the Calgary Flames has provided an immediate boost to Michigan’s back end this season. He is tied for sixth in the country for scoring among freshman with nine assists and also quarterbacks the Wolverines’ top power play unit.
In the first period of Saturday’s game, Mews took a hard knee-on-knee hit behind his own net and did not return. Last season, the 6-foot, 180-pound Ottawa native finished third among Ontario Hockey league defensemen with 82 points in 68 games.
Michigan, which ranks top-five nationally in scoring offense and defense, returns home this week to face Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday.
