Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon leaves the leaves the pitch injured during the UEFA Champion’s League match against Athletic Bilbao at St James’ Park
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has lifted the lid on Anthony Gordon’s injury woe after he left the pitch with a hip injury against Athletic Bilbao.
Gordon was withdrawn five minutes before the break, with Jacob Murphy replacing him against the La Liga side. The £40m man went off against West Ham on Sunday with a similar issue with the original injury dating back to March at Wembley, when he went off after a whack in a World Cup qualifier against Albania.
Howe told Chronicle Live: “I have not had a full rundown from the medical team. But it seems like a recurrence of the hip injury that has been plaguing him in recent weeks.
“So we will assess that and see what happens.”
Whether Gordon is risked on Sunday at Brentford remains to be seen, but with England having two World Cup qualifiers after the weekend against Serbia and Albania, his chances of selection for the Three Lions remains in doubt. Howe could not confirm whether the injury could be traced back to Wembley in March.
But reflecting on the win against Bilbao, after a 2-0 loss to West Ham, Howe said: “We had a quick turnaround for this game. I don’t think it was us at our best but we’re in a good position now in this competition.
“We learn a lot. This format is really good, more games but it’s a bigger test when you return to the Premier League. It’s been good to have a game off the back of West Ham, we’ve put that away and we scored two goals.”
Howe then challenged his players to lift their game at Brentford at the weekend but is delighted with the way things are going in Europe: “Across the board, it’s consistency in our performance wherever we play.
“Now we go away in the Champions League. Marseille away will be incredibly difficult.”
Meanwhile, Newcastle got through the game with Bruno Guimaraes staving off illness with the captain admitting he was feeling the strain in the second half.
Bruno said: “For me, it was like something was holding me with 10kg on my back. For this club, I will do everything. I started feeling ill the day before we played West Ham.”
