SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Early Wednesday morning while many were still sleeping, Mayor Elect Sharon Owens got a phone call from former vice president Kamala Harris.

In an interview with CNY Central Owens said she had never spoken to Harris before.

“Around 4:00 a.m. I got a call from Kamala Harris,” Owens said. “I saw [the caller ID said] private and I thought let me pick it up… and then I heard that voice.”

The mayor elect said during their phone call Harris congratulated her and said she looks forward to the work she will do in Syracuse.

Owens was declared the winner of Syracuse’s mayoral race on Tuesday night making history in the election as the first black woman to lead the city.

She will serve as the 55th mayor of the city of Syracuse.
