OTTAWA — The NHL is reopening its review of allegations of gambling and financial manipulation by Ottawa Senators forward Arthur Kaliyev, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Thursday morning.
Kaliyev’s former partner, Lauren Mochem, first accused him of scamming her out of more than $50,000 and of being verbally abused in a series of social-media videos released in September. After those allegations, Senators general manager Steve Staios told the media in a preseason media availability that he was “aware” of the situation.
“It’s being monitored, but there’s nothing to it, is what we’ve been told,” Staios said.
According to Friedman’s report on Thursday, the league also was aware of the allegations, questioned Kaliyev, but it took no action at the time.
Mochem later told her story to the New York Post on Monday. Following the publication of the story, both the Ottawa and Belleville Senators — the minor-league affiliate for whom Kaliyev is currently playing — declined comment to The Athletic and deferred to the NHL. The NHL also declined to comment on Thursday when asked by The Athletic via email.
Kaliyev, a 24-year-old forward, joined the Senators this offseason after beginning his career with the Los Angeles Kings. Kaliyev was drafted No. 33 overall by the Kings in 2019.
Last season, the Kings waived him before he resurfaced with the New York Rangers.
In 204 career NHL games, Kaliyev has scored 38 goals and 76 points. Kaliyev previously won an Ontario Hockey League championship in 2018 with the Hamilton Bulldogs, with Staios as his general manager and Michael Andlauer as owner.
