Rangeley officials are asking people in the Maine town to conserve water even after crews were able to repair a “catastrophic” water main break.The Rangeley Fire Rescue Department announced shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday that the broken water main had been fixed by Rangeley Water District crews, who had been working since 10:30 p.m. Wednesday to restore service to the community.Officials had informed the public at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday that the Rangeley Water District had issued a reduced water usage warning as a result of the water main break. All residents and business owners were asked to limit non-essential water use, such as laundry, dishwashing and outdoor water activities. Firefighters said this will help maintain enough water pressure for essential needs and emergency fire protection while repairs are being made.Although the break has been fixed, the Fire Rescue Department said the reservoir remains low and will take a day or two to return to normal levels. Thus, officials are still asking people to continue to be conservative with water usage.The Fire Rescue Department also said that people may notice discolored water as the reservoir refills. According to officials, the discolored water is normal and safe for human consumption.
