Syracuse, N.Y. — Fran Brown has named redshirt sophomore Rickie Collins as Syracuse’s starting quarterback for Saturday’s game at No. 18 Miami.
Brown shared the lineup news during his weekly radio show on TK99 on Thursday night.
Collins has started four games for Syracuse (3-6, 1-5 ACC) this season, losing all four. He finished those games with four touchdowns and five interceptions. Syracuse’s offense scored just 43 points in Collins’s four starts.
He was benched last week against North Carolina (3-5, 1-3 ACC) for freshman walk-on Joe Filardi, who finished just 4-of-18 passing in the 27-10 to the Tar Heels.
Collins will have a new left tackle this week with redshirt freshman Kam Pringle replacing redshirt sophomore Trevion Mack, Brown said.
Pringle will have freshman Byron Washington next to him at guard. Redshirt senior Da’Metrius Weatherspoon is set to start at right tackle while redshirt junior Joe Cruz will start at either center or right guard.
Pringle transferred to Syracuse from South Carolina and has spent his time practicing at both tackle positions. He practiced reps at both guard positions in the spring.
For Collins, it’s yet another twist in a whirlwind year he called “humbling” when speaking with reporters earlier this week.
Collins was brought into Syracuse last December to replace Kyle McCord as its starter. After spring practices, Syracuse’s coaches felt they needed more help in the quarterbacks room.
Syracuse was able to land Notre Dame transfer Steve Angeli, who won the starting job in fall camp and led the country in passing yards before tearing his Achilles tendon in the Orange’s win at Clemson (3-5, 2-4 ACC).
