Open enrollment for health insurance is underway in Idaho, giving individuals and families the opportunity to enroll in or update their coverage for 2026. The enrollment period runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 15, and any changes made during this time will take effect Jan. 1.

For most Idahoans, this is the only time of year when they can switch or adjust their plan without a qualifying life event, such as marriage or the birth of a child. That makes the next several weeks a critical opportunity to evaluate your healthcare needs and make sure your coverage—and budget—line up with them.

“Life doesn’t always go as planned, and having the right insurance means you’re prepared for the unexpected,” said Claudia Callahan, of Select Health Idaho. “That’s why open enrollment is so important — it’s your chance to be thoughtful about your coverage.”

Choosing the right plan

Health insurance is more than just coverage for doctor visits — it’s a financial safety net. Plans help pay for preventive screenings, mental health care, and chronic condition management, while also protecting families from an unexpected medical emergency.

When comparing options, Idaho residents should think beyond monthly premiums. Is your doctor in-network? Are your prescriptions covered? Do the benefits fit your lifestyle?

Benefits that go beyond the basics

Select Health, a nonprofit health plan with more than 40 years of experience, offers coverage across Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and Colorado. Select Health designs plans that emphasize both affordability and well-being.

Members have access to virtual visits — covering urgent care, primary care, and mental health appointments—often at no out-of-pocket cost when using in-network providers. For those who prefer predictability, copay plans provide straightforward, easy-to-understand costs. Extras like 24/7 nurse advice, digital tools for managing claims and prescriptions, and member discounts on services such as LASIK or acupuncture add value beyond traditional coverage.

The Select Health Wellness Rewards program even allows members to earn up to $240 per person, or $580 per family each year, simply by completing healthy activities.

Members can also estimate costs for services, compare drug prices, search for covered medications and pharmacies, and enroll in cost-saving programs—all from one platform.

Saving on prescriptions

Prescription drugs remain one of the biggest health expenses for many households. To help, Select Health offers home delivery and specialty pharmacy services, cost-comparison tools, and programs like Rx Savings Solutions®, Amazon Pharmacy, and Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs. Together, these programs provide lower-cost options for many commonly used medications.

Why coverage matters — even if you’re gealthy

Some Idahoans may wonder if health insurance is worth the investment if they rarely visit the doctor. Callahan cautions against taking that risk.

“Establishing a relationship with a primary care provider creates continuity in your care,” she said. “Your PCP can help with preventive care, chronic conditions, and referrals to specialists. Even if you don’t need care often, having coverage ensures you’re prepared for the unexpected.”

Take action

With many changes in the insurance market this year, experts encourage Idaho residents not to wait until the last minute or assume last year’s plan is still the best option. Plans and benefits can shift year to year, and what worked in 2025 may not be the right fit for 2026.

Licensed insurance agents are available to walk through the process, compare options, and answer questions. Whether you’re choosing your first plan or reassessing long-time coverage, having professional guidance can make a complicated process much simpler.

The open enrollment period ends Dec. 15, with coverage taking effect Jan. 1. Outside this window, you’ll only be able to sign up if you experience a qualifying life event.

“Don’t wait until it’s too late,” Callahan said. “Explore your options now and gain the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re covered.”
